Punchong ware was made (1392 - 1593) throughout central and southern Korea. After the Japanese invasion (1593-98) led by warrior Hideyoshi. All Korean potters were captured by Japan. In Japan, Punchong ware is also know as “Mishima” and highly respected in the ceramics world.

When I first encounted this “ugly charming” bowl, despite the unsuccessful firing and minor restoration, it has such a wonderful feel when handled. Since then, it has become part of my daily utensils. I was told by one of my clients that the inlaid pattern of the white slip reminded her of the Tibetan Mandala?
