| A Punchong Bowl * |
|
15 century A.D. Punchong ware was made (1392 - 1593) throughout central and southern Korea. After the Japanese invasion (1593-98) led by warrior Hideyoshi. All Korean potters were captured by Japan. In Japan, Punchong ware is also know as Mishima and highly respected in the ceramics world. When I first encounted this ugly charming bowl, despite the unsuccessful firing and minor restoration, it has such a wonderful feel when handled. Since then, it has become part of my daily utensils. I was told by one of my clients that the inlaid pattern of the white slip reminded her of the Tibetan Mandala? (See Korean Pottery and Porcelain of the Yi Period, illustration by Gompertz, edition 1968, pl 9b, p. 26 for description of this ware). * * * * This item has been sold to a private collector. |
