Emily Cheng and Michelle Loh are interested in how people (artists, curators, writers, architects etc) might visualize a system/structure or model of the world. How have our international experiences, our personal readings, and our relentless bombardment by media informed our mental and symbolic picture of the world? What objects, pictures, symbols, mappings, photos or shapes would one choose to conceptualize and give form to our complex world? And how can we create this big picture into a tiny physical space?
We have been asked by Triple Candie Gallery to curate a show working with a beautiful historic set of 72 mahogany drawers topped by a display case, originally from the New York Historical Society. The only limitation for each contributor, is that the piece fits inside the dimensions of: W18 x D17 x H2 . Each drawer has a sliding glass plate, so after items are installed, they cannot be easily removed. Along with the contents of the drawer, we are also asking each participant to contribute one object, (dimension between 1sq. inch to 9 sq. inches) which relates to the piece, and will be arranged in the display case along with your corresponding drawer number. The name of the contributor will appear in the label holder on the front of the drawer.
We are excited and curious to see how the 72 submissions may overlap or contrast with each view of the world, and do hope you will participate in this fun and stimulating exhibition.
